Grocery shopping - a mundane task we all have to face at some point. But have you ever stopped to think about how your actions may be impacting those around you? It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the supermarket, grabbing the items you need and getting out as quickly as possible. But in doing so, you may be unintentionally committing some serious etiquette faux pas.
Etiquette experts have weighed in on the rudest things you can do at the grocery store, from common oversights to blatant disregard for fellow shoppers. Here are the top 10 things to avoid during your next supermarket outing.
1. Blocking Aisles with Your Cart
There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to navigate a narrow aisle only to be confronted with a cart that’s been left in the middle of the path. Make sure to keep your cart to one side, allowing others to pass by easily.
2. Sampling Expired or Opened Products
While it may be tempting to sample a product before buying, it’s not okay to sample expired or opened items. Not only is this unsanitary, but it also creates a mess for other shoppers and store employees to clean up.
3. Not Letting Others Go Ahead of You in Line
If someone has fewer items than you, it’s good manners to let them go ahead of you in line. Don’t be that person who makes others wait for their turn while you unload your entire cart.
4. Overloading the Checkout Belt
A cluttered checkout belt can slow down the entire process and make things more difficult for the cashier. Try to keep your items organized and remove any unnecessary items from your cart before checking out.
5. Leaving Your Cart in the Middle of the Parking Lot
This is not only rude but also a safety hazard. Make sure to return your cart to the designated area after unloading your groceries.
6. Ignoring the ‘15 Items or Less’ Rule
The express lane is there to help speed up the shopping process for those with fewer items. Don’t abuse this rule by loading up your cart with more items than the limit.
7. Being on Your Phone at the Checkout Counter
Pay attention to the cashier and make the transaction as smooth as possible. Put away your phone and avoid distraction until the process is complete.
8. Forgetting to Use Cashback Apps or Rewards Cards
This isn’t necessarily rude to others, but it is rude to your wallet. Don’t miss out on potential savings by forgetting to use your rewards cards or cashback apps.
9. Not Cleaning Up After Your Children
Children can get messy and make a mess in the store. Take responsibility for your little ones and make sure to clean up any spills or messes they make.
10. Eating Before or After Checking Out
Avoid eating in the store, whether it’s before or after checking out. Not only can this create a mess, but it can also be distracting and impolite to others around you. Enjoy your groceries at home instead!
