Dipa Karmakar announced her retirement from gymnastics, thus bringing to an end a career that redefined success in the sport for Indians. Born on January 9, 1993, in Agartala, Tripura, Dipa rose through the ranks with sheer determination and hard work. Her journey towards stardom began when she started training at the tender age of six under the watchful eyes of Soma Nandi and her husband Bisweshwar Nandi.
As Karmakar's skills improved, she created history by winning 77 medals, including 67 gold medals, in junior and senior national competitions. Her record serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes. Within no time, she catapulted herself to the international stage and stunned the world by finishing 4th at the 2016 Rio Olympics. With this achievement, Dipa became the first Indian gymnast to qualify for the final of the Olympics.
The 31-year-old gymnast's contribution towards the sport in India has been instrumental. By breaking all barriers and silencing critics of the sport, Dipa paved the way for future generations. Throughout her distinguished career, Karmakar represented India at several international competitions, including the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, as well as the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Championships.
