4 Car Mods That Could Land You in Jail in California

December 20, 2024

California, often referred to as the birthplace of hot-rod culture, is known for its vibrant car scene and love for tricked-out rides. However, while the spirit of modifying and customizing vehicles lives on in the Golden State, there are strict regulations that prohibit certain car modifications that may be considered perfectly fine elsewhere.

Californians pride themselves on their individuality, and their cars are no exception. But with the state's rules being as stringent as they are, there are car mods that can put owners on the wrong side of the law. We'll take a look at four car mods that are considered off-limits in California.

1. Nitrous Oxide Systems

The thrill of turbocharging your ride can be exhilarating, which is why nitrous oxide systems are such a tempting addition to many performance enthusiasts. However, these nitrous systems are a big no-no in the eyes of the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the state's Bureau of Automotive Repair.

Nitrous oxide, while contributing to an adrenaline-packed experience on the track or an extensive heads-up competition, poses inherent risks to a vehicle's operating safety and performance. California Vehicle Code Section 27156 prohibits any alteration or tampering with emissions-related equipment to bypass crucial anti-pollution regulations.

2. Window Tints That Are Too Dark

Window tints are often sought after by serious enthusiasts as a stylish way to protect the cabin of their vehicles. While the popularity and widespread use of tinted windows suggest that it's an innocent styling preference, the restrictions surrounding it in California reveal a more practical safety consideration. California regulations maintain window tints must not attenuate light transmittance to a level lower than 26% for windscreens, headlights, or windscreen wipers.

Unfortunately, dark tints obstruct visibility for drivers, especially during early mornings or nighttime. Light transmittance of less than 26% puts California motorists at a disadvantage in terms of optical conditions necessary for the recognition of people and the surroundings while driving, especially in situations with little lighting.

3. Excessive Lifts

Vehicle lifts are more sought after than ever before for upgrading and improving driver awareness. Although these customizations have become remarkably popular, their acceptance hinges on maintaining specified minimum safety clearances.

These regulations dictate that the lowest point of any part of the vehicle shall not be more than 2.5 inches from the ground. Besides adhering to this benchmark, all California regulations on elevation explicitly disqualify suspension components that may serve the objectives of greater ground clearance more reliably.

4. High-Intensity Headlights

The efficiency of high-powered headlights for increased nighttime visibility has drawn significant users from California drivers, particularly those who habitually drive on foggy or low-visibility roads.

However, a multitude of headlamps with heightened intensity has shown to serve as a double-edged sword in their operation and effects. Not only have LED high-intensity headlights been proven to induce disorienting visual glare when approaching drivers unwittingly encounter them, but unfortunately, their presence on California roads is undoubtedly heavily discouraged by Vehicle Code. With all their supposed efficiency bringing enhanced danger and risks for other users, drivers must opt for standardized, manufacturer-produced vehicles where all pre-regulation, code-mandatory safety checks may still apply with increased vigor.
