9/11 Forgotten: The Shocking Truth About the Younger Generation's Ignorance

September 14, 2024

By Ashlie Miller

Reading Elisabeth Strillacci’s Opinion piece, “Where were you?” last week, brought a stark realization. The paragraph that caught my attention, however, was the one that stopped me dead in my tracks. Strillacci mentioned a conversation she overheard, one that shook her to her core: our younger generation does not know what 9/11 is.

This is a truth that is hard to accept. How could this be? September 11, 2001, is a day that will forever be etched in the minds of Americans. It’s a day that changed the course of our history, one that saw thousands of innocent people lose their lives in a horrific act of terrorism. It’s a day that should never be forgotten.

The fact that the younger generation does not know the significance of 9/11 is a wake-up call for us. As a society, we often assume that the history that shapes us will naturally pass on to the next generation. But this is clearly not the case. We are failing to remind them of the sacrifices made by those who came before. We are failing to teach them about the freedoms we enjoy today.

It is easy to get caught up in our busy lives, to assume that someone else will take care of it. But we must remember that it is our collective responsibility to preserve the memories of our past. This includes educating our younger generation about the significance of 9/11.

So, the question remains: did we forget to remind them? Have we been too caught up in our own lives to pass on this important piece of history? It is not a matter of blame, but rather a call to action. We must make a conscious effort to teach our younger generation about 9/11.

We can start by sharing our own stories about where we were on that fateful day. We can share stories of loved ones who were affected by the tragedy. We can also make sure to attend memorial services and tributes, to show our younger generation the significance of this day.

Let us take this opportunity to remind our younger generation of the sacrifices made by those who came before. Let us pass on this important piece of history, so that they too can understand the significance of 9/11 and the impact it has had on our country.
