Apple's Embarrassing iPhone 16 Bug is Finally Getting Fixed - But Why Did it Take So Long?

October 23, 2024

For many iPhone 16 owners, the past month has been a rollercoaster ride of frustration and disappointment. Since its release, a serious bug has been causing devices to freeze, ignore touch inputs, and then randomly restart. But it looks like the end is finally in sight, with the rollout of a major software update that contains a fix for this infuriating issue.

The bug has been reported by numerous iPhone 16 owners, with many taking to online forums and social media to share their experiences. The issue affects the display, causing "dead spots" that, when touched, cause the entire screen to become unresponsive to taps and swipes, leading to the phone restarting. While not every unit is affected, the sheer number of reports has certainly gotten Apple's attention.

As a long-time iPhone user myself, I was disappointed to discover that my iPhone 16 Plus, running on iOS 18.01, still had this problem just this morning. It has been worrying to see such a serious issue go unaddressed for so long. Apple has faced criticism for being slow to respond to user complaints and take action to fix the issue.

iOS 18.01, which was released on October 3, did not seem to contain a fix, and even the seventh beta of iOS 18.1 didn't appear to address the issue. However, according to the latest release notes, which were published yesterday alongside the release candidate, the public release of iOS 18.1 will finally contain the fix for this issue.

One can't help but wonder why it took Apple so long to fix such a serious bug. Perhaps the company's software department has been busy dealing with other issues - after all, this has been a bit of a cursed update cycle for Apple. The iPadOS 18 update had to be pulled last month after bricking the M4 iPad Pro, and there have been other issues, including reports of "ghost touches" on the Apple Watch.

Fortunately, the wait is almost over. iOS 18.1 is expected to be released on Monday, October 28. Updating your iPhone is a straightforward process - simply open the Settings app, go to Software Update, and follow the prompts. As well as fixing the dreaded iPhone 16 bug, the update contains other useful patches and features, including new Apple Intelligence features for the iPhone 16. So mark your calendars for October 28 and get ready to say goodbye to that frustrating bug once and for all.
