Bigg Boss, once the most talked-about reality TV show in India, has been a steady source of entertainment for viewers across the country. However, in recent seasons, the show has been marred by controversy and criticism, leaving many questioning its relevance and authenticity. Is Bigg Boss losing its edge? Is the drama and fighting on the show too scripted, or is it a deliberate attempt to keep the show afloat?
The answer to this question lies in the ever-changing viewership patterns and the ratings of the show. While the show was once a hotbed of intense drama and controversy, it now seems to have lost its spark. Viewers have started to feel disconnected from the show, with many labeling it as ‘over-the-top’ and ‘scripted’. The fact that the show has been subject to numerous controversies and scandals has further reduced its credibility.
One of the major reasons why viewers are fast losing interest in Bigg Boss is the increasing drama and fights that are often over-the-top and unnecessary. In a bid to keep the show going, the producers have begun to create more ‘fiction’ than ‘reality’, which has understandably backfired. Fans have begun to realize that much of the action in the show is staged and that it lacks authenticity. There have been numerous instances of celebrities entering the house mid-season, either to ‘boost’ the show’s TRPs or to create unnecessary drama.
Furthermore, the ‘format’ of the show itself has become stale. For years now, viewers have been subjected to the same format: the celebrities enter the house, they get divided into groups, and the rest is history. The show’s creators seem to be completely out of ideas, as every season sees the same tactics being used, albeit with fresh faces. In the hopes of getting better ratings, they create over-the-top challenges and disputes to involve the celebrities and spark controversies. While the fans appreciate some competition, the situation has now become completely out of hand.
Another issue with the show is the way celebrities are portrayed on the show. The creators have been repeatedly accused of manipulating footage to suit their own agenda. Many ‘negative’ scenes or instances of celebrities misbehaving are magnified and broadcasted repeatedly to create controversy, thereby creating a bigger image out of nothing. Nobody knows the real picture, as every event on the show is captured from many angles and narrated by voice-overs that we don’t even see. Therefore, it is rather ridiculous to project any personality based on a footage that isn’t anything close to being an authentic version.
While the show’s dropping TRPs are a clear indicator of its dwindling popularity, it is hard to pinpoint if this ‘decline’ is permanent. However, as the Indian entertainment industry rapidly evolves, TV shows like Bigg Boss need to revise and modernize their format to appeal to newer audiences. The show requires a complete makeover in terms of programming and a more thoughtful, realistic portrayal of celebrities to pique viewers’ interest and push the boundaries of what can be done on Indian television.
