The Union Cabinet has taken a monumental step towards revolutionizing the electric vehicle (EV) industry in India with the launch of the PM E-Drive scheme. This ambitious initiative is set to replace the flagship Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles (FAME) program, which had been running for nearly a decade since its inception.
Announced on a recent Wednesday, the PM E-Drive scheme boasts a whopping outlay of Rs 10,900 crore, allocated for a period of two years. This massive investment reflects the government’s determination to drive the widespread adoption of electric vehicles across the country.
The FAME program, which had been instrumental in promoting the EV ecosystem in India, has now been phased out. Launched in 2015 with an initial allocation of Rs 795 crore, the FAME scheme has since been revamped and extended multiple times. Its nine-year run saw a total disbursement of over Rs 3,400 crore. However, with the growth of the EV market picking up pace, the need for increased support and a more assertive policy was increasingly becoming evident. The PM E-Drive scheme is thus set to assume the mantle, aiming to accelerate the momentum that the Indian EV industry has gained in recent years.
One of the defining characteristics of the PM E-Drive scheme is its broader scope, aimed at targeting an array of segments within the EV ecosystem. In addition to promoting EV adoption, the new initiative also looks to streamline the manufacturing process, increase domestic production, and facilitate vital infrastructure development. In doing so, the scheme seeks to fortify India’s position in the rapidly evolving global EV landscape.
Moreover, with its two-year timeline and substantial budget allocation, the PM E-Drive scheme sends out a clear signal of the government’s commitment towards promoting sustainable energy solutions and reducing India’s dependence on non-renewable energy resources. As environmental concerns continue to take center stage in the country’s policy circles, this move is poised to resonate with various stakeholders, including consumers, manufacturers, and environmental advocates alike.
With the auto industry rallying behind the EV revolution, India seems poised to leapfrog towards a cleaner, greener future. The PM E-Drive scheme is unequivocally the most massive investment any Indian government has committed to promoting EV adoption and creation of ancillary infrastructure. Therefore, the recent Union Cabinet approval should usher in a defining era in the growth and proliferation of electric vehicles across India.
