IAN LADYMAN: Sometimes in football, the boldest move is the one that pays off. England's new boss Lee Carsley has shown he's not afraid to take risks after unveiling his squad for the opening two games of his tenure. The first thing Carsley said when naming his team was that he wanted to put his own mark on things and that's exactly what he's done. Gone are the days of playing it safe, as Carsley has boldly made his presence felt in the selection process.
Unfortunately, English football fans have become all too accustomed to conservative team selections. It's the safe and traditional route that often prevails, with too much emphasis on reputation rather than form or potential. However, that approach has been turned on its head thanks to Carsley's bold decision-making.
The fear of criticism and failure often prevents managers from making tough calls or taking an unconventional path. The nation has witnessed such a mindset countless times under Gareth Southgate, who consistently opted for experience over potential. It was often frustrating to watch players, who have been instrumental for their respective clubs, being snubbed for the usual suspects who are no longer performing at their best.
But it seems Carsley is determined to buck that trend. From day one, he's made it clear he wants to make a difference and shake things up. This is the exact kind of refreshing brand of management England needed - and supporters should be thrilled. Carsley's the man for the job, willing to put his reputation on the line to prove his vision for the future of English football.
Of course, results will ultimately determine Carsley's success or failure. As the pressure mounts and tough decisions loom, we'll get a glimpse into the real character and resolve of the new England boss. For the time being, the boss seems ready for the challenge and has certainly hit all the right notes in his first major test.
It's not easy, either. Carsley would have been well within his rights to stick with what he knew and make minor tweaks to the previous regime. It would've been far simpler to fall into an old routine rather than forging his own path. It takes courage to take a stand and usher in change.
If we take a closer look at Carsley's team selections for the first games under his stewardship, we can see the obvious care and attention that has gone into hand-picking an excellent group of players, most of whom possess the fierce drive that this squad often lacked under his predecessors.
There's no doubting that there will be questions raised when England get back to competitive action, and some calls, inevitably, won't work out as planned. Yet by welcoming such doubt, however, Carsley's demonstrated a more nuanced understanding of this critical role and is willing to challenge conventional wisdom.
This newfound energy is palpable and every football fan in England has cause to feel optimistic about what's in store for the team under Carsley's direction. England can once again be a force to be reckoned with on the global stage.
