The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high alert for the residents of Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar as the city is expected to face a torrent of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on September 25. The IMD has issued an orange alert for these areas, indicating that the situation could turn severe.
This comes after Mumbai experienced its first heavy rain spell of September early on Tuesday morning, bringing with it the much-needed respite from the sweltering heat. However, this is expected to be a short-lived relief as the IMD has predicted that the city will face another bout of heavy rain due to a low-pressure system that has formed in the Bay of Bengal.
The situation is expected to be more critical in Raigad, which has been placed on a red alert by the IMD, indicating a likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall. This alert has been issued in anticipation of the severe weather conditions that the region is expected to experience.
The residents of Mumbai and its surrounding areas are advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period. The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall, which could cause flash flooding, landslides, and other forms of damage. The authorities have been instructed to stay alert and take necessary measures to mitigate any potential losses.
The Meteorological Department has forecasted that the rains will be at their heaviest on Wednesday, September 25, but the effects of the low-pressure system are expected to be felt throughout the week. The residents are advised to stay indoors during this period and avoid any travel that is not absolutely necessary.
The Government of Maharashtra has issued instructions to the local authorities to make necessary arrangements to deal with any emergency situation that may arise during this period. The disaster management teams have been placed on high alert and have been instructed to report to their designated areas immediately in case of any emergency situation.
The Mumbai Municipal Corporation has announced that the emergency services will be available 24x7 to help those affected by the heavy rainfall. The residents can report any matter that requires immediate attention to the Corporation's emergency helpline number.
The commuters are advised to check for the latest updates on the traffic and rail situation before they start their journey, as there is a likelihood of disruptions to the services due to the heavy rainfall.
In view of the severe weather conditions, the residents of Mumbai and its surrounding areas are advised to exercise caution and not venture out unless absolutely necessary. Stay indoors and stay safe.
