BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have signed hard-throwing reliever Aroldis Chapman to a $10.75 million one-year contract.
In a shocking move the Red Sox finalized the deal with the fireball pitcher earlier today this off-season bringing to the team a three-time All-Star who boasts a blazing fastball.
The former starter has also won a World Series with the Chicago Cubs and looks to make another deep playoff run with the Red Sox. Aroldis Chapman brings a veteran presence to a young team that struggled last season finishing dead last in their division. The flame-throwing reliever will likely work as a setup man but could also see time as the team’s closer.
At 35-years old Aroldis Chapman still brings heat to the mound throwing over 100-mph. Statcast reports he consistently throws above 101.5-mph making him one of the harder throwers in the League. He’s won two Fireballer Awards and multiple triple-digit innings pitched per seasons.
Chapman likely won’t see a heavy workload in his first season with the Red sox but his veteran presence will provide valuable leadership to a young pitching staff.
Chapman started his MLB career back in 2010 with the Cincinnati Reds before being traded to the New York Yankees then joined the Chicago Cubs in 2016 to help bring home a Fall Classic. He started his MLB career as a Starting Pitcher quickly moving to a Relief Pitcher after struggling in the Rotation.
