BOSTON (AP) — In a move that could potentially shake up the landscape of the American League East, the Boston Red Sox have signed hard-throwing reliever Aroldis Chapman to a $10.75 million, one-year contract.
According to reports, Chapman, who has been one of the most dominant left-handed pitchers in baseball over the past decade, will join the Red Sox bullpen for the 2024 season. This signing marks a significant boost to the Red Sox's relief corps, which struggled with consistency last year.
Chapman, a six-time All-Star, boasts an impressive resume, featuring seven seasons with at least 30 saves. He has spent time with the Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, and Chicago Cubs, posting a 2.18 ERA and striking out 14.9 batters per nine innings pitched throughout his career.
Despite struggling in 2022 with a 4.46 ERA, Chapman has continued to show flashes of his elite velocity, reaching speeds of over 100 miles per hour on multiple occasions. He seemed to find his footing towards the second half of last season, posting a 1.71 ERA across his final 19 appearances.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora and general manager Brian O'Halloran have expressed enthusiasm about the signing, citing Chapman's wealth of experience and ability to close out high-pressure games. His addition will likely create a formidable late-inning combination alongside young talent such as Tanner Houck and Kenley Jansen.
As for what led the Red Sox to commit to a pricey one-year deal, O'Halloran explained, 'We felt like Aroldis was an excellent fit, and he still has plenty to offer. He brings a veteran presence to our bullpen and has an exceptional track record in some pretty intense moments.'
With their latest move, the Red Sox appear determined to build a more robust roster around their key stars, embracing a mix of veterans and up-and-coming players as they pursue another deep postseason run in the near future.
