SpiceJet has moved the Supreme Court against a Delhi High Court order that grounds three of its aircraft engines, citing safety concerns and the potential for widespread disruptions to air travel across India.
The Delhi High Court order came after an inspection by India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) found irregularities and safety issues with the three engines, which are reportedly manufactured by Swiss-based engine maker Pratt & Whitney.
SpiceJet, however, claims that the engines are safe for operation and that the DGCA has unfairly targeted the airline due to its use of the Pratt & Whitney engines.
The airline’s plea to the Supreme Court came after the High Court refused to grant it a stay on the order grounding the engines.
SpiceJet’s lawyers approached the Supreme Court late on a working day, seeking an urgent hearing on its petition, which was promptly acknowledged by the apex court. The Supreme Court registry has been asked to circulate an email seeking an urgent hearing on SpiceJet’s plea, as requested by the airline.
A SpiceJet spokesperson stated that the airline is hopeful of a favorable decision from the Supreme Court, adding that the airline will take all necessary steps to minimize disruptions and ensure that passengers are not affected.
However, the development has left hundreds of passengers worried and wondering about their scheduled flights. The airline’s social media handles were filled with queries and complaints from passengers, with many seeking a refund or a change in flight schedules.
SpiceJet, meanwhile, continues to operate its flights according to schedule, despite the uncertainty surrounding the three grounded engines. However, industry insiders warn that any prolonged disruption could spell disaster for the airline’s operations and finances.
As the aviation industry watches the situation closely, the Supreme Court is expected to hear SpiceJet’s plea and take a decision soon. The decision could have far-reaching implications not just for SpiceJet, but also for India’s aviation industry as a whole.
For now, all eyes are on the Supreme Court as it weighs in on the controversy surrounding SpiceJet’s engines. Will the airline manage to fly high once again, or will it be grounded by regulatory hurdles?
