The NFL's coaching carousel is about to kick into high gear, and two of the Detroit Lions' top coordinators are poised to be in the middle of it all. By mid-January, it's expected that a whopping seven head-coaching slots will be open for the taking, and Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn are going to be two of the hottest candidates on the market.
Johnson and Glenn have been instrumental in the Lions' resurgence this season, with Johnson's high-flying offense leading the NFL in scoring and Glenn's stingy defense showing marked improvement from last year. As such, it's no surprise that teams around the league are already licking their chops at the prospect of bringing one of these two coordinators on board as their next head coach.
The question on everyone's mind is, which team will ultimately land one of these two coveted coaches? The Chicago Bears are one team that could certainly be in the mix. After a disappointing season, they're likely to be looking for a new head coach, and Johnson or Glenn would be an excellent fit. But they won't be the only team in the running – expect the likes of the Indianapolis Colts, the Arizona Cardinals, and the Carolina Panthers to all be sniffing around as well.
Of course, the Lions would love to keep both Johnson and Glenn in the fold, but it's unlikely they'll be able to retain both of these talented coordinators. Losing one of them would be a significant blow, but it would also be a testament to the fact that the Lions are doing something right.
As for Johnson and Glenn, this is an opportunity they've both been working towards for years. They've paid their dues as coordinators, and now it's time for them to take the reins as head coaches. Whichever team ends up landing one of these two will be getting an absolute steal – they're both poised for great things in the years to come.
