Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has come under intense scrutiny after suffering a humiliating 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in their second group stage match of the Europa League.
The club had started their campaign on a high note, securing a resounding 5-1 win over Slovan Bratislava in their opening fixture. However, the drubbing they received at the hands of Dortmund has raised serious questions about the team’s defensive capabilities and Rodgers’ tactics.
Despite the disappointing loss, Rodgers has refused to alter his approach, insisting that he will stick to his attacking philosophy, which he believes has served the team well in the past.
Rodgers’ assertion has come as a surprise to many, given the manner in which his side was dismantled by Dortmund. The German giants were clinical in their finishing and exposed Celtic’s vulnerabilities at the back.
While many have called for a re-evaluation of Rodgers’ tactics, he remains defiant, arguing that his side’s attacking flair is what sets them apart from their opponents.
“We will not change our approach or deviate from our philosophy,” Rodgers said in a statement. “We are an aggressive team that likes to take risks and play on the front foot. We will continue to do so, even if it means we concede goals.
“Defensively, we were poor against Dortmund, but that does not mean we should abandon our attacking principles. We will work on shoring up our defense, but we will not compromise on our attacking style of play.”
Rodgers’ comments have sparked a heated debate among Celtic fans, with some backing their manager’s stance while others believe he needs to be more pragmatic in his approach.
As the team prepares for their next match, Rodgers will be hoping that his players can respond positively to the setback and demonstrate the resilience and fighting spirit that has characterized their performances in the past.
Only time will tell if Rodgers’ decision to stick to his guns will pay off, but one thing is certain – Celtic will need to tighten up their defense if they are to succeed in their Europa League campaign.
