The sight of Mike Evans stretched out on the ground in the back of the end zone, then limping off with a hamstring injury, was bad enough. The crowd held its collective breath as the star receiver made his way to the locker room, the dread settling in that this could be the moment that changed the trajectory of the Buccaneers' season. And then it got worse. When Tampa Bay’s other top receiver, Chris Godwin, went down in the closing minutes of the game, it became all too clear that this was a double-digit loss to the Ravens that would leave a lasting impact on the team.
Evans, who has been the Buccaneers' top target all season, left the game in the second quarter after hauling in a deep pass from quarterback Baker Mayfield. He struggled to get up off the ground and, after a brief consultation with the trainers, limped off the field and into the locker room. The diagnosis was a hamstring injury, one that is certain to keep him sidelined for at least a few games.
But just when it seemed like things couldn't get any worse, Chris Godwin took a hit to the head and chest area from a Ravens defender. The wide receiver lay motionless on the field for a few moments before slowly making his way to the sideline. After a brief evaluation, Godwin was ruled out for the remainder of the game with a possible concussion and a chest injury.
The Buccaneers, who were already struggling on offense, were left to wonder how they will adapt to life without their two top receivers. The answer, at least on this day, was not very well. Mayfield was forced to rely on a hobbled running game and a group of inexperienced receivers, and the results were nothing short of disastrous. The Ravens' defense, which has been one of the best in the league all season, made life miserable for Mayfield and the Buccaneers, holding them to just 13 points on the day.
For a team that was already struggling to find its footing, this double-digit loss to the Ravens is a crushing blow. Without Evans and Godwin, the Buccaneers' offense is left with a few scrappy role players and a bunch of unproven youngsters. And with a brutal stretch of games on the horizon, the road ahead looks as daunting as ever.
Still, Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles remains optimistic. 'We'll get through this,' he said in the post-game press conference. 'We've got a good roster, we've got a good team. We'll figure it out.'
For now, though, the Buccaneers are left to pick up the pieces of a season that is rapidly spiraling out of control. Without Evans and Godwin, the chances of making a deep run in the playoffs are dwindling by the day. And as they look to the road ahead, the Buccaneers can't help but wonder what could have been.
