ATHENS, Ga. — The seventh-ranked Tennessee Volunteers found themselves on the wrong end of a lop-sided affair Saturday, falling to the No. 12 Georgia Bulldogs 31-17 in a game that was never truly in doubt after the first quarter.
Georgia, led by quarterback Stetson Bennett, looked every bit the part of a national championship contender, systematically dismantling the Tennessee defense with a potent mix of run and pass.
The Volunteers, meanwhile, were unable to find any semblance of rhythm on either side of the ball, as the Bulldogs' swarming defense consistently harassed quarterback Hendon Hooker and bottled up the Tennessee running game.
The tone for the day was set on the opening drive, when Georgia marched 75 yards in 12 plays, capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Daijun Edwards. The Bulldogs would go on to add two more scores in the quarter, as Bennett found wide receiver Adonai Mitchell for a 9-yard touchdown pass and kicker Jack Podlesny booted a 44-yard field goal.
The Volunteers did manage to find the scoreboard in the first quarter, as kicker Chase McGrath connected on a 47-yard field goal. However, the Bulldogs would hold a commanding 17-3 advantage after one, a deficit from which Tennessee would never recover.
The two teams would trade scores throughout the remainder of the contest, but the result was never truly in doubt. Georgia added a 31-yard field goal in the second quarter, as well as a 3-yard touchdown run by Kendall Milton in the third.
Tennessee's offense did manage to show flashes of brilliance, including a 7-yard touchdown pass from Hooker to wide receiver Jalin Hyatt in the fourth quarter. However, it was far too little, too late, as the Volunteers were left to ponder what might have been.
In the end, it was Georgia's day, as the Bulldogs improved to 7-2 on the season, while Tennessee fell to 6-3. The Bulldogs will look to carry the momentum into next week's showdown with rival Auburn, while the Volunteers will attempt to regroup ahead of a critical matchup against Missouri.
