Bumrah's Indian Rampage: England's Desperate Move to Survive the Pace Storm

December 2, 2024

Former English captain Michael Vaughan has sounded the alarm for the English team ahead of their highly anticipated 5-match Test series against India next year. Vaughan, known for his tactical acumen and experience of playing against top-notch fast bowlers, has identified Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah as the biggest threat to the hosts. Bumrah, with his unique action and ability to generate pace and bounce, has been a persistent problem for batsmen across the globe.

Vaughan, who captained England between 2003 and 2008, has some sage advice for the English side, particularly their batting order. The 48-year-old Englishman believes that Ben Stokes & Co. need to shake up their batting order to counter the impact of Bumrah when the Indians visit next year. England’s batting order has been their Achilles heel in recent times, and Vaughan thinks that a drastic change is the need of the hour.

England’s struggles against quality fast bowling are well-documented, and Bumrah is arguably the fastest and most intelligent bowler in the Indian arsenal. His ability to swing the ball both ways and generate pace in excess of 145 km/h has made him a nightmare for batsmen. England’s top-order woes have persisted for quite some time now, and Vaughan suggests that a change in their batting order could be the key to negating Bumrah’s impact.

One of the solutions Vaughan proposes is the inclusion of a left-hander at the top of the order. The left-handed batsman would face Bumrah with the new ball, which could potentially nullify his impact. Furthermore, Vaughan suggests that England should look at playing a more dynamic and aggressive brand of cricket to keep Bumrah at bay. This could include playing with more intent and taking the attack to the Indian bowlers.

While Vaughan’s suggestions may seem drastic, they are certainly worth considering given England’s struggles against quality fast bowling. England’s batting order has been a topic of discussion for quite some time now, and a shake-up could be just what they need to counter the threat of Bumrah. However, it remains to be seen whether the English selectors will heed Vaughan’s advice and make the necessary changes to their batting order before the Test series against India.
