EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Greg Roman has faced his share of criticism in his first year as the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive coordinator. Despite having some of the most talented players on the roster, the Chargers' offense has failed to live up to expectations. Roman's play-calling has been questioned, and fans have begun to wonder if he is the right man for the job.
As the Chargers prepare to face the Kansas City Chiefs on the road, Roman and head coach Brandon Staley know that they need to find a way to get their offense back on track. The team has struggled to score points consistently, and it has been unable to put together a complete game on both sides of the ball.
Herbert, the Chargers' star quarterback, has been vocal about the need for the offense to improve. He knows that the team has the talent and the potential to be one of the best in the league, but something is holding them back. “We need to be more consistent,” Herbert said in a press conference on Wednesday. “We need to find ways to move the ball and score points. It's not just about one or two plays, it's about putting together a complete game.”
Roman has been working closely with Herbert and the rest of the offense to find solutions to their problems. They have been studying film, practicing new plays, and trying to iron out the kinks in their system. Roman knows that he is under pressure to deliver, but he is confident in his abilities and in the abilities of his players.
“We're close,” Roman said. “We just need to put it all together. We need to find a way to make that one or two big plays in each game. If we can do that, I think we'll be in good shape.”
The Chargers' offense will face a tough test in Kansas City. The Chiefs have one of the best defenses in the league, and they will do everything they can to shut down Herbert and the rest of the Chargers' offense. But Roman and Herbert are undaunted. They know that this is an opportunity for them to prove themselves and to show the league what they are capable of.
“We're not worried about what other people think,” Herbert said. “We're worried about what we can control. We're going to go out there, play hard, and try to win a football game. That's all we can do.”
The Chargers will face off against the Chiefs on Sunday in a game that could have huge implications for their season. If they can find a way to get their offense back on track and come away with a win, they could be back in the mix in the AFC West. But if they fail, they could find themselves falling further behind in the division.
It's a must-win game for the Chargers, and Roman knows that he has to deliver. He's facing the ultimate test as an NFL offensive coordinator, and it will be interesting to see how he responds.
