DEAR ABBY: My husband, “Guy,” and I enjoyed a happy marriage for 30 years, despite the fact that his mother disliked me and did everything she could to undermine our relationship. The memories of our times together, however, have been tainted by the circumstances surrounding his recent passing.
Guy died suddenly in his sleep last month while we were vacationing in South Asia. It was our dream vacation - a chance to explore a beautiful region together. Unfortunately, it ended abruptly when I woke up one morning to find Guy unresponsive.
I was devastated, but I knew that I had to act quickly to arrange for his body to be transported back home. However, getting everything in order proved to be challenging. Between complying with local regulations, obtaining necessary documents, and coordinating with the embassy, the process was time-consuming and exhausting.
As I navigated this difficult process, I found myself having to make difficult decisions, including how to inform our family and friends back home about Guy's passing. In my grief, I decided not to reveal the news immediately, choosing instead to wait until I had everything in order.
It wasn't until days later, after I had made the necessary arrangements, that I finally shared the news with his mother. Her reaction was swift and extreme, publicly lashing out against me in a fit of anger. According to her, I had been keeping Guy's passing a secret from her for malicious reasons, disregarding the fact that I needed time to grieve and get my affairs in order.
As expected, her anger soon turned to me, accusing me of disrespecting her and their family. She even went as far as questioning my love for Guy, alleging that my decision to wait was a sign of lack of concern for her feelings.
The loss of my husband was heartbreaking enough, but having to deal with her anger and resentment made it even harder for me to cope. Despite our 30-year marriage, she still found ways to drive a wedge between Guy and me, even in death.
