Coach Franklin Sounds the Alarm: Is the Transfer Portal Ruining College Football?

December 17, 2024

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State coach James Franklin hopes college football players soon won’t have to make the same decision as backup quarterback Beau Pribula. Pribula, who was expected to be the Nittany Lions’ second-string quarterback, made the shocking decision to leave the team after entering the transfer portal.

This move has left Coach Franklin and many other college football coaches reevaluating the current transfer portal system and its impact on the sport. As the landscape of college football continues to shift, the transfer portal has become a pressing issue that needs to be addressed.

The transfer portal was designed to give student-athletes more control over their futures, but it has also led to a host of unintended consequences. With the rise of the portal, we’ve seen an increase in player movement, with student-athletes switching schools mid-season, and leaving their teams without much notice. This has left coaches scrambling to fill the gaps in their rosters and has caused instability in college football programs.

While the transfer portal has given student-athletes more flexibility, it has also created a system where losing players to the portal has become the new norm. Coaches like Franklin are finding themselves struggling to build team cohesion and stability, as players come and go at an alarming rate.

"When a player enters the portal, it creates uncertainty for the team," Coach Franklin said in a recent press conference. "It disrupts the team’s chemistry and makes it difficult for us to prepare for games."

Franklin isn’t alone in his concerns. Many college football coaches and administrators are calling for changes to the transfer portal system. Some have suggested introducing stricter eligibility requirements or implementing a "free agency" model, where student-athletes can enter the portal but would have to sit out a season before becoming eligible to play for their new teams.

While these are just a few ideas being floated, it’s clear that something needs to be done to address the issues surrounding the transfer portal. As the sport continues to evolve, it’s up to coaches, administrators, and the NCAA to work together to find a solution that balances the needs of student-athletes with the needs of college football programs.
