Coco Gauff Stuns Crowd With Shocking Comeback At Australian Open

January 16, 2025

Coco Gauff extended her unbeaten start to the year on Wednesday but had to survive a second-set wobble in a 6-3, 7-5 win over Jodie Burrage at the Australian Open.

Big-hitting Burrage served for the second set at 5-3 but nerves overcame her in a maiden appearance on Rod Laver Arena and she double-faulted twice to allow Gauff to level.

Gauff, who has been in impressive form this year, seemed to be cruising to victory after taking the first set 6-3. However, Burrage, who was making her debut on the prestigious Rod Laver Arena, had other plans.

The British player started to find her rhythm in the second set, using her powerful groundstrokes to push Gauff back and forth across the court. As the set wore on, it seemed like Burrage was gaining momentum, and she eventually found herself serving for the set at 5-3.

But just as it seemed like Burrage was about to level the match, she began to feel the pressure. Serving for the set, she double-faulted twice, allowing Gauff to break back and level the score at 5-5.

Gauff, who had been watching her opponent's nerves get the better of her, sensed her chance and pounced. She broke Burrage's serve once again to take a 6-5 lead, and then served out the set to take the match 6-3, 7-5.

Despite the wobble in the second set, Gauff's victory was a testament to her mental toughness and ability to perform under pressure. The young American has been making waves in the tennis world with her impressive form, and this win will only add to her growing reputation.

As for Burrage, the loss will be a tough pill to swallow, but she can take heart from her performance on the big stage. Despite her nerves getting the better of her, she showed flashes of brilliance, and her powerful groundstrokes will undoubtedly cause problems for future opponents.

The Australian Open continues to heat up, with the top players in the world battling it out for the coveted title. Gauff's win over Burrage is just one of many exciting matches that have taken place so far, and tennis fans can expect plenty more thrills and spills as the tournament progresses.
