A rare and elusive meteor shower is expected to occur tonight over Central Alberta, providing a spectacular display of shooting stars for those in the region. The Annual Draconid meteor shower, which occurs in October, is usually a minor meteor shower producing only a few meteors per hour. However, this year's event is expected to be more active, with dozens of shooting stars visible in the night sky.
The Draconid meteor shower is caused by the Earth passing through the trail of debris left behind by the comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. This comet is a periodic comet that orbits the Sun every 6.5 years and is responsible for producing several meteor showers throughout the year.
The best time to catch a glimpse of the Draconid meteor shower is in the early hours of the morning, just before dawn. This is because the radiant point of the meteor shower, which is the point in the sky from which the meteors appear to originate, is highest in the sky during this time. The radiant point is located in the constellation of Draco, which is visible in the northern sky.
In addition to the Draconid meteor shower, another rare phenomenon known as 'Steve' has been lighting up the skies in recent days. 'Steve' is a bright, glowing streak that appears in the sky and is caused by a temperature of around 5,000 degrees Celsius being reached in the air. The exact cause of 'Steve' is still not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to a rare atmospheric phenomenon.
Those in Central Alberta hoping to catch a glimpse of the Draconid meteor shower and 'Steve' should find a dark location with minimal light pollution. A pair of binoculars or a telescope may also be useful for getting a closer look at the meteors and 'Steve'. Clear skies are also essential for viewing the meteor shower, so it is hoped that the weather will cooperate tonight.
