Cricket Legend Clive Lloyd Slams Controversial TwoTier Test Plan That Will Destroy The Sport

January 7, 2025

Clive Lloyd a West Indies cricket legend has come out strongly against a proposed two-tier structure for Test cricket that would see top teams like India Australia and England dominate the international calendar.

The two-tier system which has been mooted by the International Cricket Council ICC would create a division between the top teams and the rest with the likes of India Australia and England playing each other more frequently.

However Lloyd who captained the West Indies to two World Cup victories in 1975 and 1979 is fiercely critical of the idea saying it would be terrible for all teams involved.

Lloyd believes that the proposed structure would lead to a decline in the overall standard of Test cricket as weaker teams would be denied the opportunity to play against the best teams in the world.

He also argues that the two-tier system would create a lack of competitiveness and interest in the sport as fans would be denied the opportunity to watch their teams take on the best opposition.

The ICC has been exploring ways to revamp the Test cricket format in an effort to boost its popularity and make it more appealing to a younger audience.

However Lloyd says that the proposed two-tier structure is not the answer and that the ICC should focus on finding ways to make the sport more competitive and accessible to all teams.

Instead of creating a two-tier system Lloyd suggests that the ICC should look at ways to improve the standard of cricket in weaker teams by providing them with more resources and support.

This could include providing coaching and training programs as well as increasing funding to help these teams develop their infrastructure and compete at a higher level.

Lloyd also believes that the ICC should look at ways to make Test cricket more appealing to fans by introducing new and innovative formats such as day-night Tests and shorter match durations.

By doing so the ICC can help to boost the popularity of the sport and make it more attractive to a wider audience without having to resort to a two-tier structure that would be detrimental to the sport as a whole.
