In recent years, movies about senility and mortality have taken on a pitilessly bleak, frightening tenor, notably in such awards magnets as “Amour,” “Vortex” and “The Father.” These films have gotten us to ponder our own mortality and the mortality of our loved ones in a very raw and unfiltered way. However, there is a limit to how much sadness and bleakness we can take in before we crave something more uplifting and light-hearted.
This is exactly what “Memory Lane,” a new Dutch comedy film, provides. Directed by Jelle de Jonge, the film takes an unexpected turn into the lives of those struggling with senility and turns it into a ridiculously hilarious road-trip comedy.
“Memory Lane” follows an elderly man diagnosed with dementia who escapes the confines of his care home to relive his childhood memories by embarking on a cross-country trip. What ensues is a series of outrageous, heartwarming, and sometimes raunchy moments as the man navigates unfamiliar territories with the help of an unlikely companion.
De Jonge’s decision to take a more boisterous approach to addressing the complexities of dementia and the human experience is a breath of fresh air. There is a fine line between being irreverent and insensitive, and “Memory Lane” walks this tightrope masterfully.
One of the standout features of the film is its ability to balance humor and pathos. De Jonge masterfully avoids exploiting the characters’ situations for cheap laughs, instead using their situations to explore deeper themes such as family, loss, and self-discovery.
The chemistry between the leads is undeniable, bringing an air of authenticity to the film. As they navigate through the ups and downs of their journey, their bond grows stronger, and we see a true friendship blossom.
“Memory Lane” has been selected as the Netherlands' submission for the Oscar international feature race, and it's easy to see why. The film is an explosion of color, life, and energy, with an infectious soundtrack that complements the overall tone of the movie.
So, if you’re looking for a film that will make you laugh and cry in equal measure, look no further than “Memory Lane.” It’s a triumphantly life-affirming film that reminds us that even in the darkest moments, there is always something to be cherished and laughed about.
