Tragedy struck for the No. 11 Tennessee football team on Monday when head coach Josh Heupel delivered the heartbreaking news that team captain and star linebacker Keenan Pili would be missing the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL.
The injury occurred during the first defensive series, and though it may have seemed like just another tackle to some, the severity of the injury was clear as day to those close to the program.
For a team that has their sights set on a conference championship and a deep playoff run, losing one of their most integral defensive pieces is a monumental blow. Pili was more than just a linebacker for the Vols; he was a leader on and off the field.
As the team's leading tackler, Pili was the anchor of the Tennessee defense. He was the one who set the tone for the rest of the unit, and his absence was felt immediately. His ability to read plays and diagnose where the ball was going allowed the Vols to limit opponents' scoring chances, and now that he's gone, the team will have to find a new way to fill that void.
Coach Heupel and his staff will have to go back to the drawing board and devise a new plan for how they want to approach games without their star linebacker. This could include shifting their defensive scheme, playing more aggressively to hide their weaknesses, or relying on other players to step up and fill the void left by Pili.
