Microsoft has announced a massive removal of games from the Xbox platform. Starting this December 2024, a total of 19 Xbox games will no longer be available for purchase or download from the Xbox Store. The affected games include some popular titles, and gamers are left with a limited time to grab them before they disappear forever.
TrueAchievements reported the planned delistings after the Xbox Store quietly updated its listings for the affected games. Although the removal of games from a digital platform is not uncommon, the sheer number of games being delisted this time has caused some concern among gamers.
The main reason behind the removal is often due to licensing agreements between the game developers and the rights holders of the intellectual properties (IP) or music included in the games. These agreements typically have an expiration date, which can lead to the game's removal if a new agreement cannot be reached.
Another common reason is the decommissioning of older online servers. As new games are released, some developers discontinue support for older titles, making it difficult for gamers to play online or access certain features.
Xbox gamers who have purchased the affected games will still be able to download and play them after they are removed from the store. However, gamers who do not own the games but are interested in playing them will have a limited time to buy and download the games before they become unavailable.
Although Microsoft has announced the removal of the 19 Xbox games, the company has not confirmed a specific date for the delisting. Gamers are advised to visit the Xbox Store and purchase the games they are interested in as soon as possible to avoid missing out on these titles.
