BOSS Filo Tiatia was left seething with anger and frustration after the Dragons' disastrous first half in their 32-15 United Rugby Championship defeat to the Scarlets in Llanelli. The Dragons' dismal performance in the opening 40 minutes ultimately sealed their fate, as they struggled to contain the Scarlets' relentless onslaught.
The Scarlets, fueled by their passionate home crowd, came out of the blocks with a fierce intensity that the Dragons simply couldn't match. The Welsh side's dominance was evident from the outset, as they pinned the Dragons back with a series of punishing attacks that tested the visitors' defensive resolve to the limit.
As the half wore on, the Dragons' woes only deepened, with the Scarlets' forwards and backs combining to devastating effect. The Dragons' usually solid defense was torn asunder by the Scarlets' clever interplay and cunning kicking game, which repeatedly exposed the visitors' frailties on the flanks.
Despite their best efforts, the Dragons were unable to stem the tide of Scarlets' attacks, and the home side's try line was breached all too easily. The Dragons' players looked shell-shocked and bewildered as they trudged off the pitch at the interval, their heads bowed in despair and disappointment.
For Filo Tiatia, the Dragons' boss, the first half was a nightmare that he couldn't wake up from. His team's abysmal performance was a stark contrast to the standards they had set in previous games, and he was at a loss to explain the underlying reasons for their collapse. The usually articulate and measured Tiatia was visibly angry and frustrated, his emotions bubbling over as he tried to make sense of the chaos that had unfolded before his eyes.
As the Dragons regrouped and refocused at the interval, Tiatia's stern words and pointed criticisms were still ringing in their ears. The Dragons' players knew they had let themselves and their coach down, and they were determined to make amends in the second half. Although they managed to stem the tide of Scarlets' attacks and restore some semblance of pride, the damage had already been done, and the match was all but lost.
In the end, the Dragons' brave second-half effort was too little, too late, as the Scarlets ran out comfortable 32-15 winners. For Filo Tiatia and his team, the defeat was a harsh lesson in the importance of starting games strongly and maintaining a high level of intensity throughout. As they pondered the reasons for their first-half meltdown, they knew they had to regroup and rediscover their mojo if they were to get their season back on track.
The Dragons will be hoping to bounce back from this setback when they take on their next opponents, but for now, they are left to ponder the what-ifs and maybes of a game that got away from them all too quickly. One thing is certain, however: Filo Tiatia will be demanding a massive improvement from his team in their next outing, and anything less will be unacceptable.
