Eagles in Shambles Without Osimhen - What's Going Wrong?

October 13, 2024

The Super Eagles have faced a pressing concern in recent times, and it is all centered around the team's struggled to find the back of the net when their star striker Victor Osimhen is not available. The Nigerian national team has heavily relied on Osimhen for goals, but whenever he is out due to injury or other reasons, the attack looks largely innocuous.

This was the case on Friday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, where the team had a hard time finding the back of the net. Despite other striking options performing reasonably well at their respective European clubs, they failed to replicate the same form for the national team.

The lack of adequate cover for Osimhen is now a major concern for coach and fans alike. As the main striker, Osimhen has always been crucial to Super Eagles chances of winning matches, but the over dependence on him raises questions about the strength and depth of the squad.

It has often been said that a successful team should be able to hold its ground even when its key players are out, and this is exactly where the Super Eagles have fallen short. With important international games coming up, the team needs to sort out their attacking issues and quickly find a reliable solution that can lead them to victory without Osimhen.

Many have argued that other European clubs serve as great examples of teams that can maintain their level of performance even when their best players are injured. The absence of those key players is quickly filled by players from the squad, thus ensuring minimal disruption to the patterns of play.

This isn't currently possible for the Super Eagles, and that raises a lot of questions about the recruitment and scouting mechanisms. Some have argued that the problem may lie in the selection process rather than a lack of talent in the country, while others point out the poor performance of coaches in grooming players.

Whatever the case, there is little time for introspection as matches keep coming and something has to give. Ensuring adequate cover for Osimhen and the like must be a top priority for coach and officials to consider if they want to have the chance to lift silverware in the future.
