Alex Edler’s storied 15-season career with the Vancouver Canucks has come full circle, as the stalwart defenseman embarked on an emotional journey to Vancouver to ink a one-day contract and retire with the only NHL team he’s ever known.
Expressing his profound gratitude for the chance to bid farewell to his playing career with the Canucks, Edler beamed with pride as he donned the team’s jersey for one final time.
‘I’m truly honoured to have the opportunity to sign a one-day contract and retire as a Canuck,’ an emotional Edler reflected during the press conference. ‘The love and support I’ve received from the fans, the organization, and my teammates throughout the years has meant the world to me, and for that, I am eternally grateful.’
Edler, who was drafted by Vancouver in 2004, leaves behind a remarkable legacy in Vancouver, tallying 414 points in 925 games for the Canucks. This achievement stamps his name in the franchise’s record books, serving as a testament to his tireless work ethic, unshakeable dedication, and footballing prowess.
Looking back, Edler reminisced about the innumerable memories he’s forged on and off the ice during his illustrious career. From sharing victories in the dressing room to being part of a tight-knit community that has supported him every step of the way, he undoubtedly feels fortunate to have experienced so many cherished moments.
‘The entire journey has been an incredible ride, and I’ve got so many good memories that I’ll always treasure,’ Edler confessed, as a nostalgic smile crept onto his face. ‘The time has come for me to hang up my skates, but I know that the invaluable lessons I’ve learned, the amazing friendships I’ve forged, and the indelible mark I’ve left on this organization will stay with me forever.’
