Football Association chiefs have sparked outrage among fans and pundits alike after naming Thomas Tuchel as the new England manager, leaving a host of domestic candidates in the cold.
The former Chelsea boss was confirmed as Gareth Southgate’s successor on Wednesday, sparking a furious reaction from TV pundit and former England defender Gary Neville.
Neville, who has long been an advocate for promoting homegrown talent, slammed the appointment, branding it a ‘blow’ to aspiring English managers.
The appointment of Tuchel marks a significant departure from the FA’s previous strategy of nurturing domestic talent and promoting from within.
Southgate’s decision to step down following the recent European Championship campaign left a power vacuum at the top of the England setup, sparking a frantic search for his replacement.
While Tuchel’s pedigree and managerial experience make him an attractive candidate on paper, many had hoped the FA would opt for a homegrown candidate, such as West Ham boss David Moyes or Brentford manager Thomas Frank.
Frank, in particular, had been touted as a top contender after steering the Bees to a string of impressive results in the Premier League.
But in a move that has left many in the football community reeling, the FA has opted for Tuchel’s technical expertise and proven track record in the Champions League instead.
As news of the appointment broke, Neville took to social media to express his disappointment and frustration, stating that the decision would have far-reaching consequences for English football.
‘This is a big blow to English managers,’ Neville tweeted. ‘Tuchel is a top manager, but the FA had a chance to promote from within and give a domestic candidate a chance to shine.’
Neville’s sentiments were echoed by a host of other former players and pundits, who expressed fears that the appointment would create a glass ceiling for aspiring English managers.
As the dust settles on the FA’s bombshell announcement, all eyes will be on Tuchel as he prepares to take the reins and steer England towards a new era of success.
But as the German guru sets about imposing his own brand of football on the Three Lions, he will do so with the knowledge that many in the football community are watching his every move with a mixture of interest and skepticism.
