Orlando Pirates are set to unleash a potent attack in the upcoming season with the duo of Tito Mabasa and Sphephelo Makgopa reportedly on the radar of the Sea Robbers technical team. The Buccaneers have been quiet in the transfer market thus far, but insiders close to the club reveal that head coach Jose Riveiro and his technical team have identified the pair as the missing link in their quest for league honors. Makgopa and Mabasa boast an impressive goal-scoring record, and bringing them on board would undoubtedly provide Orlando Pirates with the required firepower to challenge for the league title.
It is no secret that Orlando Pirates struggled to find the back of the net last season, managing to score just over 30 goals throughout the season. In a division where the top three teams boasted an average of at least 45 goals, Pirates' shortcomings in front of goal were exposed, ultimately counting against their league title aspirations. In light of this, there has been a growing clamor for Orlando Pirates to strengthen their attacking options in preparation for the new season.
Speaking to various sources within the Pirates setup, it becomes clear that there is an acceptance that they require the services of a striker who can consistently find the back of the net. The name Tito Mabasa has come up in recent weeks, although no deal has been finalized just yet. By roping in Mabasa, who boasts an exceptional goal-scoring record in the GladAfrica Championship, Orlando Pirates could add the clinical finishing that they so desperately lack at present.
However, with Pirates reportedly considering an alternative or possibly even a complementary option in Bafana Bafana striker Sphephelo Makgopa, there is genuine hope that Jose Riveiro's outfit can assemble the kind of formidable force that could put fear into the hearts of their counterparts in South African football. The former Cape Town City hitman did impressively well during his stint with Mamelodi Sundowns albeit not consistently getting regular game time.
At present, there are concerns that Riveiro's first season at the helm may be undermined by his squad's inadequacies. Having Makgopa and Mabasa to call upon, though, could put the Portuguese manager in pole position to lead his new side to the latter stages of the competition, although there are still other external elements to also consider such as Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs. Signing these valuable assets would signal Pirates' intentions and bolster the strike force and squad depth this term for the Orlando Pirates.
