Experts Reveal the Dark Side of Screen Time: Are Your Kids at Risk?

November 14, 2024

As we celebrate Children’s Day 2024, it’s essential to acknowledge the significant impact that excessive use of mobile phones and other gadgets can have on our little ones. While technology can be a valuable tool for education and entertainment, overexposure to screens can lead to a multitude of mental and physical health issues, poor academic performance, and eyesight problems. So, how can we keep kids away from mobile phones and other gadgets and ensure they maintain a healthy balance between technology and real life?

According to experts, children under the age of 18 should have limited screen time, and parents should establish strict rules and guidelines to maintain this balance. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time for children under two years old, except for video chatting with family and friends. Children aged two to five years should have limited screen time of about one hour per day, co-viewing high-quality educational programming with their parents. Meanwhile, children aged six and above should have consistent limits placed on screen time and prioritize physical activity and outdoor play.

Furthermore, establishing screen-free zones and times, such as during meals, family gatherings, or bedtime, can help minimize the risks associated with excessive screen time. Educating children about the risks of overexposure to screens can also help them develop healthy habits and be more responsible users of technology.

Some practical tips to keep kids away from mobile phones and other gadgets include setting screen time limits, monitoring their activities, promoting physical activity and outdoor play, and engaging them in other hobbies and interests. Moreover, setting a good example as a parent or guardian is crucial in promoting a balanced lifestyle and healthy habits.

The negative impact of excessive screen time should not be underestimated. Studies have linked it to increased risks of depression, anxiety, obesity, and sleep problems in children. In addition to the physical health risks, excessive screen time can also lead to a decline in cognitive and academic performance, social skills, and attention span.

By acknowledging the risks and taking proactive steps to minimize screen time, we can help our children maintain a healthy balance between technology and real life. Remember, childhood is a time for exploration, learning, and play – not just for swiping, tapping, and gaming.
