Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ramiz Raja has expressed his opinion about the current state of Babar Azam's Test cricket career and it is certainly going to send shockwaves across the cricketing fraternity.
As per Ramiz Raja, despite having an impressive record in the longest format of the game, Babar Azam still has a lot to achieve in Test cricket. And when one takes a closer look at his numbers, it is hard to disagree with the former PCB chief's assessment.
In 55 Tests, the Pakistani skipper has scored 3,997 runs at an average of 43.92. However, if one delves deeper into these statistics, there are some concerning trends that have emerged in the recent past.
For instance, it is astonishing to note that Babar has not scored a Test half-century since 2022. This prolonged spell of low form is certainly going to raise eyebrows and has already led to a great deal of scrutiny about the right-hand batter's ability to excel in the longest format of the game.
Moreover, the 2023 season has been one to forget for Babar, especially in the context of his leadership. After being handed over the reins of the Pakistani team, he failed to make a substantial impact and was eventually relieved of his duties following a group-stage exit in the T20 World Cup in June this year.
Given this backdrop, Ramiz Raja's comments about Babar Azam needing to do more in Test cricket are hardly surprising. In fact, it is refreshing to see a former PCB chief being brutally honest about the state of affairs in Pakistani cricket and the need for the country's top batters to step up their game.
With the T20 format witnessing an explosion in popularity in recent years, there is a growing feeling among cricket enthusiasts that the skills required for success in the shortest format of the game are not always conducive to producing the same level of success in Test cricket.
For Babar Azam, the challenges are very much real. Not only does he have to rediscover his lost form in Test cricket, but he also needs to prove his doubters wrong by showcasing his skills and temperament in the longest format of the game.
