Decisions on the future of South Yorkshire bus services have reached a key point and now residents have the chance to make their voices heard. A major consultation has been launched giving locals the opportunity to have their say on the future of the regions bus network.
The South Yorkshire Transport Committee is seeking the views of bus users and non-users alike on a number of key issues including whether the region should have more control over its bus services. The consultation which runs until next month will help shape the future of the regions bus network and ensure it meets the needs of local communities.
Currently the majority of bus services in South Yorkshire are run by private companies with the local authority having limited control over routes timetables and fares. However the Transport Committee is considering proposals to introduce a franchising system similar to that used in London where the local authority has more control over the network.
The franchising system would give the local authority the power to set timetables and routes as well as control over fares and the types of buses used. This would allow for a more coordinated and integrated transport network which would make it easier for people to get around the region.
The consultation also seeks views on how to improve the overall bus network including increasing the frequency of services and extending operating hours. Other proposals include improving bus stops and shelters and introducing new technology such as contactless payments and real-time information systems.
The South Yorkshire Transport Committee is keen to hear from as many people as possible and is urging residents to take part in the consultation. The results of the consultation will be used to inform any decisions about the future of the regions bus network and will help ensure that the network is providing the best possible service for local people.
Residents can take part in the consultation by completing an online survey or by attending one of the public meetings which will be held across the region. Full details of the consultation and how to take part are available on the Transport Committees website.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for residents to have their say on the future of the South Yorkshire bus network and the Transport Committee is urging everyone to get involved and make their voices heard.
