F1 Drivers Torn: The Shocking Reason They Want to Ditch the Fastest Lap Bonus Point

October 18, 2024

Formula 1 is once again at the center of controversy after the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council announced the removal of the extra point for achieving the fastest lap of a grand prix, starting from the 2025 season.

The bonus point, which was introduced in 2019 to encourage drivers to push the limits and set new track records, has been a topic of debate among drivers, team principals, and fans alike. The rule states that a driver is eligible for the bonus point only if they finish the race within the top 10.

Not all drivers are on the same page when it comes to the removal of the fastest lap bonus point. Some, like reigning champion Max Verstappen, feel that the extra point added an extra layer of excitement to the sport. On the other hand, there are those who believe that the rule was an unnecessary addition to the sport and may have even backfired, leading to drivers and teams adopting defensive strategies.

One of the main arguments in favor of removing the bonus point is that it often rewarded drivers who were already running in the top 10 and had little to gain from actually pushing for the fastest lap. This, in turn, led to drivers settling for a safe points finish rather than risking it all for a chance to grab the extra point.

However, other drivers have expressed disappointment at the news, stating that the fastest lap bonus point was a great way to spice up the racing. They argue that it encouraged drivers to go all out for a quick lap, adding an extra element of excitement to the sport.

When quizzed about the decision, F1 driver and fan favorite Charles Leclerc said, “While I understand the reasoning behind the decision to remove the fastest lap bonus point, I have to admit that I will miss the thrill of chasing that extra point.”

Another driver who is set to be affected by the change is George Russell, who has been one of the most consistent drivers over a single lap. He reflected on the decision, saying, “It’s natural to feel a little disappointed when you hear that something that has been an integral part of the sport is being removed.”

As the debate rages on, fans are eagerly awaiting the 2025 season to see how the removal of the fastest lap bonus point will affect the racing and overall strategy of the teams. Will teams focus more on settling for safe points finishes, or will they choose to risk it all in search of victory? One thing is for sure – with the fastest lap bonus point gone, the 2025 season is set to be a thrilling ride.
