Ahead of Sunday’s highly anticipated matchup with the Carolina Panthers, the Atlanta Falcons have made a shocking move by releasing cornerback Kevin King, a former second-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
King, who was selected by the Green Bay Packers with the 33rd overall pick in 2017, had high hopes of becoming a cornerstone of the Packers’ defensive unit. However, his career has unfortunately been marred by a string of injuries and inconsistencies that have hindered his ability to live up to expectations.
Despite his impressive physical attributes, including his 6-foot-3-inch frame and 4.43-second 40-yard dash time, King struggled to establish himself as a reliable starter in Green Bay. Over the course of his five-year tenure with the Packers, King appeared in 45 games, starting 19 of them, and recorded 80 tackles, six interceptions, and 20 passes defended.
After signing a one-year deal with the Falcons in the offseason, many believed that King had a chance to revitalize his career under the guidance of new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen. However, it appears that the Falcons did not see enough from King during the preseason and training camp to warrant keeping him on their active roster.
The release of King comes as a surprise to some, given the Falcons’ apparent lack of depth at the cornerback position. Nevertheless, it is clear that the team is looking to move forward with a younger, more athletic core of players. As the Falcons prepare to face the Panthers on Sunday, they will have to rely on other members of their secondary to step up and fill the void left by King’s departure.
While King’s release may be a setback for the 27-year-old cornerback, it is not the end of the road for his NFL career. With his size, speed, and athleticism, King still has the potential to be a valuable asset for teams in need of a physical corner. It will be interesting to see if King can catch on with another team and finally live up to the hype that surrounded him on draft day.
For now, the Falcons will focus on their upcoming game against the Panthers, while King will begin the process of rehabilitating his career. One thing is certain – only time will tell if King will be able to turn things around and achieve the level of success that was expected of him when he entered the league in 2017.
