20th Century Studios has been behind some of the most iconic superhero movies of the past few decades, but not all of them have aged as well as others. Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) came along and gave all the Marvel characters a single home, there were 16 superhero movies released from the late 90s to the mid 2000s, with widely varying quality. Among these were Tim Storys two Fantastic Four movies, released in 2005 and 2007, which have been largely forgotten in the wake of the MCU.
The original Fantastic Four film, released in 2005, was a commercial success, grossing over 330 million dollars worldwide. However, it received mixed reviews from critics, with many feeling that it did not do justice to the original comic book characters. The movie followed the origins of the Fantastic Four, with Mr. Fantastic (Ioan Gruffudd), Invisible Woman (Jessica Alba), Human Torch (Chris Evans), and the Thing (Michael Chiklis) gaining their powers after exposure to cosmic rays during a space mission.
The sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, was released in 2007 and also performed well at the box office, grossing over 290 million dollars worldwide. However, it also received mixed reviews from critics, with many feeling that it was too formulaic and did not live up to the standard set by other superhero movies. The movie introduced the character of the Silver Surfer (Doug Jones), who serves as the herald of the planet-devouring villain Galactus.
Despite their commercial success, both movies have been largely forgotten in the wake of the MCU. The Fantastic Four characters are now owned by Disney, and a new movie featuring the characters is reportedly in development. However, it is unclear whether this new movie will be a reboot or a continuation of the original films.
In recent years, there has been a trend of reevaluating older superhero movies and incorporating them into the MCU. This was seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which featured characters from previous Spider-Man franchises, and Deadpool & Wolverine, which is rumored to feature characters from the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises. It is possible that the Fantastic Four characters could be incorporated into the MCU in a similar way, but it is unclear whether this would involve acknowledging the events of the original Tim Story movies.
In conclusion, while Tim Storys two Fantastic Four movies may not have aged as well as some other superhero movies, they still have a special place in the hearts of many fans. The introduction of the Fantastic Four characters into the MCU could be a great opportunity to revisit these characters and give them the justice they deserve. Whether or not this involves acknowledging the events of the original movies remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure - the Fantastic Four are an important part of the Marvel universe, and their story is far from over.
