Hundreds of young Filipinos are about to discover a new world of possibilities in farming, thanks to a groundbreaking project initiated by the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (Searca). The Laguna-based organization has partnered with the Thailand Regional Agriculture Innovation Network (RAIN), harnessing Thai expertise to draw more youth into the sector and promote cutting-edge agricultural technologies.
At the heart of this ambitious endeavor is Searca's 'Sowing Seeds: Cultivating Youth's Future in Agriculture' career orientation program. The brainchild of Searca Center Director Glenn Gregorio, this initiative seeks to captivate the imagination of Southeast Asia's next generation of agricultural leaders by introducing them to pioneering innovations in the field.
A recent meeting between Sharon Malaiba, head of Partnerships Unite and lead for the Young Forces for Agricultural Innovation or #Y4AGRI, and Phonlapat Amornrattanaket, business development specialist for the Thailand RAIN project, underscored the critical importance of collaborations in this sector. As part of the Searca team, Malaiba and Phonlapat outlined a comprehensive strategy to empower young farmers, leveraging drone technology, and precision agriculture innovations to maximize yields and profitability.
The choice of drone technology as a cornerstone for the 'Sowing Seeds' program was deliberate, with Phonlapat Amornrattanaket highlighting the transformative impact of this innovation in Thailand. According to Phonlapat, the judicious deployment of drones has not only enhanced crop productivity but has also contributed to higher profit margins for farmers.
These innovations are supported by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and represent the cutting edge of climate-smart and precision agriculture, implemented under the Thailand RAIN project by Winrock International. The partnership agreement between Winrock and Searca is set to expand the scope of this collaboration, facilitating joint innovation scanning, knowledge sharing, and guidance for other universities and stakeholders.
Gregorio emphasized the importance of providing guidance and support to other universities and actors, stating that, 'Both Winrock and Searca will define best practices for bundling finance, extension, equality, and data into innovations, and co-host learning sessions.' Furthermore, both organizations have committed to co-developing youth outreach programs aimed at exciting young people about agri-innovations and empowering them with entrepreneurial skills.
The success of the 'Sowing Seeds' program has sparked optimism for the future of agriculture in Southeast Asia. With a clear roadmap in place, the project is poised to inspire and mobilize young farmers across the region. As the first session in Bangkok demonstrated, there is an abundance of enthusiasm and energy within the global agricultural community for programs that drive innovation and support youth-led initiatives in farming.
The partnership between Searca, Winrock International, and the Thailand Regional Agriculture Innovation Network serves as a compelling model for international collaborations in the pursuit of sustainable agricultural development and youth empowerment. By harnessing cutting-edge innovations and promoting knowledge sharing across borders, this groundbreaking initiative is about to redefine the face of farming in Southeast Asia and inspire the world to follow in its footsteps.
