Former All-Pro Safety Turns to the Motor City, Can He Still Deliver?

December 2, 2024

Defense has been an area of concern for the Detroit Lions this season, and with injuries mounting, the team has been forced to get creative in finding reinforcements. In a move that could potentially pay dividends, the Lions have added former All-Pro safety Jamal Adams to their practice squad, giving them a much-needed boost to their secondary.

Adams, a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, has had a decorated career, earning three Pro Bowl selections and a First-Team All-Pro nod in 2019. His impressive resume makes him an enticing addition to the Lions, who are hoping that he can still bring some of that Pro Bowl magic to their struggling defense.

Despite his impressive resume, Adams has had a bit of a tumultuous career, particularly of late. He was traded to the Seattle Seahawks from the New York Jets in 2020, but his time in Seattle was marred by a severe finger injury that required multiple surgeries. He was eventually released by the Seahawks, and has been searching for a new home ever since.

One of the biggest questions surrounding Adams is whether he can still play at the elite level that he once did. Prior to his injury, Adams was one of the most feared safeties in the league, known for his ferocious hitting and innate ability to read opposing offenses. However, his most recent stint in Seattle was marked by struggles, as he failed to regain his pre-injury form.

Despite these concerns, the Lions are willing to take a chance on Adams, who could potentially provide a much-needed spark to their secondary. With injuries piling up, the Lions have been forced to rely on some untested players, and the addition of Adams provides them with a veteran presence who has been in key games before.

Adams will start on the practice squad, where he will have the chance to work his way back into game shape and prove that he still has what it takes to be a difference-maker in the league. It will be interesting to see how he fares in this new role, and whether he can get his career back on track.

For now, Adams is just focused on getting back on the field and contributing to the team in any way he can. "This is an amazing opportunity for me, and I'm grateful to the Lions for giving me a chance," said Adams. "I know I still have a lot to give, and I'm excited to get to work with this team."
