Franchise Cleans House: 4 Big Names AXED in Shocking Roster Purge

October 17, 2024

The New Orleans Pelicans have made some major moves, waiving no less than four players in a shocking roster shake-up. The biggest name on the list is undoubtedly Elfrid Payton, a talented guard who was once touted as a future star in the league after being selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft.

Payton has had an inconsistent career, showing flashes of brilliance but struggling with injuries and inconsistent play. Despite his potential, he has never quite lived up to his lottery pick pedigree, and the Pelicans have clearly decided to move on from him. The 29-year-old guard will now be forced to look for a new home, where he will hope to revive his career and prove himself once again in the league.

But Payton wasn't the only player to get the axe. Forward Keion Brooks Jr. and Josh Oduro, as well as point guard Trhae Mitchell, were also waived by the Pelicans. This move is likely a sign that the team is eager to clear cap space and rebuild their roster, possibly in preparation for a big free agency signing or a trade. Whatever the reason, it's clear that the Pelicans are committed to making some major changes this offseason.

For fans of the team, this move may come as a surprise, especially given the potential that Payton has shown at times. However, with the NBA being the highly competitive league that it is, teams are constantly looking for ways to improve and gain an edge over their opponents. Sometimes, this means making tough decisions and cutting ties with players who aren't working out. The Pelicans have clearly decided that it's time to move on from Payton and the other waived players, and it will be interesting to see what they do next.

One thing is certain: this move is just the beginning of what promises to be a wild and unpredictable offseason for the Pelicans. With so many teams in the league looking to make big moves and overhaul their rosters, it's anyone's guess what the Pelicans will do next. Will they make a big free agency signing? Will they trade away some of their key players? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the Pelicans are committed to making some major changes this offseason.
