Freee Recycle Takes The Lead In Recycling Tyres To Save Nigeria From Environmental Disaster

September 20, 2024

In commemoration of World Cleanup Day 2024, a tyre waste recycling and rubber manufacturing company, FREEE Recycle, has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Nigeria’s environmental sustainability through innovative recycling solutions and contributions to the circular economy.

While speaking at a press briefing in Lagos on Thursday, the Managing Director of FREEE Recycle, Ifedolapo Runsewe, said that the company remains dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of tyre waste, which poses significant hazards to the ecosystem and human health.

According to Runsewe, FREEE Recycle's contributions to Nigeria's circular economy have not only helped in minimizing the quantity of waste tyres ending up in landfills but also enabled the recovery of valuable raw materials that can be reused to produce new products.

Tyre waste remains an enormous environmental challenge in Nigeria due to the massive number of used vehicles plying the country’s roads daily. The tyre waste generated from these vehicles poses significant environmental and health risks if not properly disposed of and managed. The waste can become a breeding ground for disease-carrying insects and can also be set on fire, emitting toxic fumes that pollute the air.

FREEE Recycle's approach to innovative recycling solutions offers a welcome respite from the environmental challenges posed by tyre waste. The company's recycling facilities process waste tyres and transform them into raw materials, which can be used to produce a wide range of rubber-based products, including paving blocks, rubber sheets, playground materials, etc.

The Managing Director added that the company is committed to expanding its capacity to process more waste tyres, underscoring the need for more sustainable waste management systems in Nigeria. He emphasized that the company's long-term goal is to develop the necessary infrastructure to recycle all waste tyres generated in Nigeria and to use the obtained materials in the manufacturing of new eco-friendly products.

The event marking the World Cleanup Day also saw the calling for increased efforts and collaboration among key stakeholders to tackle the issue of waste management in Nigeria. Runsewe highlighted the importance of public awareness in waste management, as the public plays a crucial role in curbing waste disposal in Nigeria.
