Gareth Southgate and Gerald Davies Receive Top Honors in New Year Honours List

December 31, 2024

The latest New Year Honours list has been released, and several notable figures in the sports world have been recognized for their outstanding contributions. Gareth Southgate, the current manager of the England national football team, and Gerald Davies, a former Welsh rugby union player, have been awarded knighthoods for their services to their respective sports.

Southgate, who has been at the helm of the England national team since 2016, has been instrumental in leading the team to several notable victories, including the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup and the finals of the 2020 European Championship. His knighthood is a testament to his dedication and hard work in promoting English football on the global stage.

Davies, on the other hand, is a rugby legend who has made significant contributions to the sport both on and off the field. A former Wales and British Lions player, Davies has also served as a trustee of the Welsh Rugby Union and has been involved in various charitable initiatives. His knighthood recognizes his tireless efforts to promote rugby and support the next generation of players.

In addition to Southgate and Davies, several other sports personalities have been recognized in the New Year Honours list. Nine-time Paralympic gold medallist Hannah Cockroft has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her services to athletics. Cockroft, who has won numerous gold medals in the T34 100m and 800m events, is one of the most successful Paralympic athletes of all time, and her CBE is a well-deserved recognition of her achievements.

Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson has also been honored with a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to athletics. Hodgkinson, who won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, is one of the rising stars of British athletics, and her MBE is a testament to her hard work and dedication to the sport.

The New Year Honours list is an annual tradition in which the British monarch recognizes the achievements of individuals from various fields, including sports, arts, and philanthropy. The list is compiled by the Cabinet Office and is released on New Year's Day. This year's list includes a diverse range of honorees, from sports personalities to community leaders and volunteers.

The recognition of Southgate, Davies, Cockroft, and Hodgkinson is a welcome acknowledgement of their contributions to their respective sports. Their achievements serve as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and demonstrate the power of sports to bring people together and promote excellence.
