John Reardon, a renowned Hallmark star, has recently shared a heartfelt and shocking update regarding his health. The 49-year-old Canadian actor, known for his roles in Citytv’s “Hudson & Rex” and various Hallmark Christmas films, including the recently premiered “Believe in Christmas,” took to Instagram to reveal his tonsil cancer diagnosis.
On December 24, Reardon posted two contrasting photos, with the first showing him enjoying a night out and the second depicting him in a hospital bed, wearing a mask and with his eyes closed. The difference between these two images highlights the significant impact his health journey has had on his life. In the caption, Reardon expressed his gratitude for the love and support he received from his loved ones, stating, “Last night was my first night out after my recovery from tonsil cancer. Has been a long road between these two pictures.”
The actor attributed the difference between the two photos to the unwavering support he received from his family and friends, which played a pivotal role in his recovery. Reardon specifically thanked his wife, Canadian actor Meghan Ory, for taking on the responsibilities of their whole world to help him get better. He also expressed his admiration for his brave kids, who inspired him throughout his health ordeal.
Reardon and Ory, who have been married since 2008, share three young children together. The couple recently co-starred in the 2024 Hallmark movie “Believe in Christmas.” In his Instagram post, Reardon went on to praise other family members and loved ones for their care and support during his recovery from tonsil cancer. He thanked his dad for taking him for walks every day, even when it was challenging for him to get out of bed. Reardon also appreciated his mom for making him soups, ginger honey tea, and green juices to help him gain calories.
In addition, the actor thanked his sister and brother for helping with the kids and navigating the challenges of life when he couldn’t. Reardon’s in-laws, nanny, and neighbors also received appreciation for sending the family food, love, and kind words during his cancer journey. He further acknowledged the medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and technicians, for their exceptional care and support, referring to them as his heroes.
Tonsil cancer, a type of oropharyngeal cancer, develops in the tonsils, which are two oval-shaped masses of lymphatic tissue at the back of the throat. According to the Mayo Clinic, tonsil cancer occurs when healthy cells mutate and become cancerous, leading to the growth of tumors. Although experts are unsure about the exact causes of tonsil cancer, the primary risk factor is human papillomavirus (HPV). Other risk factors include tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, and a weakened immune system.
Oropharyngeal cancer, which affects the middle section of the throat, is relatively rare in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 58,450 people in the U.S. will develop a type of oropharyngeal or oral cavity cancer, including tonsil cancer, in 2024. Most cases of tonsil cancer are diagnosed in individuals over the age of 55. Treatment for tonsil cancer may involve surgery, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy, although Reardon did not share details about his specific treatment.
In conclusion, Reardon’s health update ended with a powerful message for his followers, emphasizing the significance of kindness. He stated, “Kindness is an underappreciated quality in people. We should never undervalue it. Celebrate it and distribute it as much as possible. It is free and life-changing. Happy Holidays.” This heartfelt message serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion, love, and support, not only during the holiday season but throughout the year.
