Harry Brook's Blistering Century Leaves England on Brink of Miracle Comeback

New Zealand vs England's first Test match took a thrilling turn on Thursday as the visiting team staged an incredible recovery to trail the Kiwis by just 29 runs.

The day began with England in a precarious position at 71 for four but thanks to a magnificent century by Harry Brook, they fought back to reach an impressive total of 335 for nine at the close of play.

The 24-year-old Brook, riding his luck at times, showcased his unbridled talent with a tenacious display of batting that kept the Kiwis at bay for most of the day.

Brook's crucial 137-run partnership with Ben Stokes for the fifth wicket changed the complexion of the game. Although Stokes ultimately fell for 49, Brook continued to pile on the runs, supported by useful cameos from the tailenders.

The Black Caps were left ruing their failure to capitalize on England's early struggles as they dropped catches and gave away unnecessary runs through fielding errors.

New Zealand bowler, Matt Henry, accounted for four of the English wickets but leaked 103 runs in the process. His colleagues, although economical, were not clinical enough to finish off the job.

England's big-hitting Leach contributed an unbeaten 19 off just 12 deliveries as the tail continued to torment New Zealand, with Stuart Broad amassing an enterprising 16 off 22, ultimately outshining Broad's defensive showing on the first day.

New Zealand will be under pressure to begin their second innings well, considering the narrow margin they hold over the English. The remaining challenge for the English batting unit is to eliminate their top-order wobble, if they wish to hold onto hopes of a much-needed Test triumph.
