HEINEN GOES WILD Canucks Winger Scores Twice in Dominating 6-3 Win Over Blackhawks

October 23, 2024

CHICAGO (AP) — Danton Heinen scored two of Vancouver's four first-period goals, and the Canucks beat the Chicago Blackhawks 6-3 on Tuesday night for their third straight win. J.T. Compher and Elias Pettersson also scored in the first as the Canucks came out flying against a Chicago team that was playing without two of their top players.

The Canucks dominated the first 20 minutes of the game, outshooting the Blackhawks 17-7 and scoring on four of their shots to take a 4-0 lead into the locker room. Heinen's first goal came just 2:40 into the game, as he won a battle for the puck in the corner and slipped a shot past Blackhawks goalie Petr Mrazek.

Compher made it 2-0 Vancouver at the 10:36 mark, converting a pass from Josh Morrissey and beating Mrazek glove-side. Pettersson added to the Canucks' lead with a power-play goal at the 14:46 mark, beating Mrazek with a wrist shot from the left circle.

Heinen's second goal came at the 19:55 mark, as he scored on a breakaway to give the Canucks a 4-0 lead after one period. The Blackhawks tried to mount a comeback in the second period, but Canucks goalie Casey DeSmith was equal to the task, stopping all 13 shots he faced in the period.

The Blackhawks finally got on the board with a goal from Jason Dickinson at the 6:45 mark of the third period. However, by that point, the Canucks had already built a 5-0 lead on a goal from Sheldon Dries at the 3:19 mark. The Blackhawks added two more goals in the final 10 minutes, but it was too little, too late.

The Canucks' third straight win brings their record to 15-5-1 on the season, while the Blackhawks dropped to 8-12-1 with the loss. The Canucks will look to keep their winning streak alive when they visit the Nashville Predators on Thursday, while the Blackhawks will try to bounce back at home against the San Jose Sharks on Friday.
