Historic Home Day Care Drama: Couple Throws in the Towel After Bitter 2-Year Battle

September 15, 2024

Auburn, Maine - The dream of opening a day care business at an historic home near picturesque Lake Auburn has turned into a nightmare for Tom and Kathleen Reed. The couple, who had envisioned a nurturing environment for young children, is now left with a bitter taste after a two-year struggle to make their vision a reality.

The Reeds' woes began when they first applied for the necessary permits to turn the historic home into a day care center. Despite their best efforts, they encountered a series of bureaucratic hurdles that seemed to shift and morph every time they thought they were close to clearing the final obstacle. The cost of maintaining the property, coupled with the exorbitant expenses associated with complying with ever-changing regulations, started to take a toll on the couple's finances.

According to Tom Reed, the exasperating experience has left the couple 'throwing their hands up in frustration.' The financial strain, combined with the emotional toll of dealing with red tape, has forced the Reeds to make the difficult decision to put the property up for sale. The couple's initial goal of providing a safe and welcoming space for children to learn and grow has been reduced to a mere memory, replaced by the harsh reality of a failed business venture.

When asked about the experience, Kathleen Reed reflected on the irony of their situation. 'We had thought that our home, with its rich history and idyllic setting, would be the perfect place for a day care. Instead, it's turned into a constant source of stress and financial strain.' Tom Reed added, 'It's hard not to feel that we've been fighting an uphill battle the entire time. Despite our best intentions, it seems like the system is just not designed to support small business owners.'

The Reeds' decision to sell the property marks the end of a chapter that began with hope and promise. As the couple moves forward, they are left to wonder what could have been if they had encountered a more supportive environment. For now, the historic home near Lake Auburn remains a testament to the challenges faced by small business owners and the elusive nature of the American dream.
