HMPV, or human metapneumovirus, has been making headlines lately, sparking fears of a new pandemic. However, according to experts from the Indian Medical Association (IMA), HMPV is not as deadly as COVID-19, which wreaked havoc globally in the early days of the pandemic.
While HMPV can cause lung infections in some individuals, it is not a virus that causes severe pneumonia or results in high mortality rates like COVID-19 did during the first wave of the pandemic. This comes as a relief to many, especially those who are still reeling from the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
HMPV is a common virus that affects people of all ages, but it is most severe in older adults, young children, and those with weakened immune systems. The virus can cause respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, and runny nose, as well as more severe symptoms like wheezing and shortness of breath.
Despite the fact that HMPV is not as deadly as COVID-19, it is still essential to take precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. This includes practicing good hygiene, such as washing your hands regularly and avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
In addition, individuals who are at high risk of developing severe illness from HMPV, such as older adults and those with underlying health conditions, should take extra precautions to protect themselves. This may include wearing a mask in public, avoiding crowded areas, and staying up-to-date on all recommended vaccinations.
The IMA expert's statement emphasizes the importance of not panicking about HMPV, but rather being aware of the risks and taking necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. By taking a proactive approach to prevention and being informed about the latest developments, we can reduce the risk of HMPV infections and protect ourselves and our loved ones from the potential consequences of this virus.
