The Christmas season in Yucatán is characterized by traditional dinners that bring together family and friends, filling homes with love, laughter, and the aromas of delicious regional dishes. However, in 2024, Yucatecans face a daunting reality: the festive feast is going to cost a lot more than it did in previous years.
The main reason behind this increase in costs is the rise in prices of basic food staples, such as poultry, pork, beef, and various vegetables. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the price of a kilogram of turkey has increased by nearly 15% in the past year alone.
This price hike has been attributed to a combination of factors, including higher production costs, increased demand during the holiday season, and external factors such as droughts and extreme weather conditions. Additionally, economists point out that the current inflation rate, which is at its highest in several years, has also played a significant role in the price increases.
For a typical Yucatecan family, the traditional Christmas dinner consists of a variety of dishes, including the famous cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork marinated in citrus juice and spices), papadzules (corn tortillas stuffed with boiled eggs and covered in a spicy pumpkin seed sauce), and rellenos negros (stuffed chicken cooked in a black mole sauce). However, with the price of pork increasing by over 10% and chicken by nearly 12%, families will need to dig deeper into their pockets to maintain their traditional holiday feast.
Many residents in Yucatán have expressed their concerns about the rising costs, pointing out that it may be difficult for families to maintain their holiday traditions. 'For us, Christmas dinner is not just a meal; it's a time for family and friends to gather together and create memories,' said Ana Hernández, a local resident. 'We'll do our best to make it happen, but the prices are definitely going to hurt this year.'
While some families may choose to adjust their menus or scale back on their holiday celebrations, many others will continue to prioritize their traditional dinner, even if it means cutting back on other expenses. 'We'll make it work,' said Jesús Poot, a shopkeeper in Mérida. 'We'll just have to be more careful with our spending and find ways to save in other areas. After all, Christmas is about family, not just about food.'
