Huawei's Android Killer Set for Dramatic Launch This Month - What It Means for Your Smartphone

September 15, 2024

Huawei is gearing up to introduce its homegrown mobile operating system later this month, revealing that HarmonyOS Next will be the tech giant's first fully autonomous mobile operating system without any Android support after years of relying on the competing platform.

According to the statement made by a top Huawei executive during a trade fair, HarmonyOS Next is 'entirely independently developed' that has complete autonomy in its operations. This could very well be the final nail in the coffin in Huawei's long-standing relation with rival company Google's Android operating system, upon which its smartphones have depended upon for a very long time.

As one of the major mobile phone producers in the world, Huawei's move to launch its very own, fully-fledged mobile operating system could shake up the whole market dynamic. HarmonyOS Next seems to signal the company's attempt to reduce its reliance on other competitor businesses like Google, with whom it has long depended on to provide a software backbone for most of its mobile products.

First introduced in 2019, HarmonyOS was initially met with skeptics about its technical capabilities and global reach, particularly given Android's widespread usage in many devices. However, the past few years have seen Huawei consistently increasing investment and effort into the development of HarmonyOS with an aim of breaking free from Google's ecosystem and operating independently.

According to Huawei executives, having a fully autonomous mobile operating system like HarmonyOS Next could have significant benefits in terms of flexibility and scalability for its mobile business. As mobile technology continues to advance rapidly with the increasing adoption rates of emerging technologies such as 5G and IoT, having control and command over in-house operating systems could very well become critical.

Additionally, with ongoing trade tensions that caused tensions between nations affecting global supply chains, this bold step by Huawei might as well indicate the Chinese tech giant's proactive approach to reducing potential operational risks, relying on the expertise and abilities the company has garnered throughout the years of R&D.
