MADISON, Wis. — The Halloween scares had a chance to linger for the No. 2 Nebraska volleyball team heading into its juggernaut showdown against seventh-ranked Wisconsin, but it was the Badgers who walked away haunted as the Huskers delivered a seismic road sweep, exorcising their demons in the process.
The highly anticipated matchup between two of the nation’s top-ranked teams did not disappoint, with the Huskers ultimately emerging victorious in a hard-fought three-set battle (25-20, 25-15, 25-23). Nebraska’s impressive road win marked a monumental shift in momentum for a team that has struggled with the Badgers in recent years.
“I think our team did a great job of staying focused and composed throughout the match,” said Nebraska head coach John Cook. “We knew that Wisconsin was going to be a tough opponent, but our players showed a lot of grit and determination to come away with the win.”
Wisconsin entered the match with high hopes of upsetting the second-ranked Huskers and improving their standing in the conference. However, the Badgers were ultimately unable to contain Nebraska’s potent offense, led by the dynamic duo of outside hitters Madi Kubik and Lindsay Krause. The two players combined for 25 kills, with Kubik contributing 14 and Krause adding 11.
“Madi and Lindsay were on fire tonight,” Cook exclaimed. “They were a nightmare for the Wisconsin defense to deal with, and their playmaking ability was a huge factor in our win.”
Additionally, the Huskers received significant contributions from their middle blockers, Callie Schwarzenbach and Lauren Stivrins, who recorded 10 and 8 kills, respectively. The duo also played a crucial role in the team’s defensive efforts, combining for 7 blocks and helping to stifle the Badgers’ offense.
As the Huskers celebrate their monumental road win, they will also take pride in knowing that they have finally exorcised their demons against a Wisconsin team that has haunted them in recent years. With this victory, Nebraska improves its record to 19-2 overall and 12-1 in conference play, while the Badgers fall to 16-6 overall and 8-5 in the conference.
